"Just breathe." Two simple words can help us relax, release tension, or decrease anxiety. In significant situations, we pay attention to our breathing. With each inhale, we note the cool air that enters our nasal passages and fills our lungs. With each exhalation, the diaphragm pushes inward as we blow out the remaining breath.
Most of the time; however, we pay little attention to the the fact that we take in, on average, 9 to 16 breaths per minute. Using 12 breaths as a calculation, we take in 720 breaths per hour, 17,280 breaths per day, 6,307,200 breaths per year, and by age eighty, the colossal number of 504,576,000 breaths.
Quite a number, isn't it? And to think that we hardly take notice of the simple act of breathing, or the series of chain reactions that takes place in order to carry oxygen to reach every cell and organ of the body.
Breath was God-breathed: "Then the Lord formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7)
Other verses relate, as well: "For as long as life is in me, And the breath of God is in my nostrils," (Job 27:3) and "All Scripture is God-breathed... " (2 Timothy 3:16).
When Jesus reappeared to His Disciples after the resurrection, He spoke with them, then breathed on them, saying, 'Receive the Holy Spirit." (John 20:22)
Just breathe. Two simple words. It's what God intended, so that we might have life--through Him. #
