You know the bumper stickers, the ones that start with a Capital "I," followed by a red heart and whatever "thing" it is that a person loves? These messages seem to be everywhere.
We are so human, aren't we? We desire to express to the world what is important to us (although it doesn't have to be on a bumper sticker). However, the sticker has certainly become a popular way to show what we are passionate about. There are many things to love: sports (football, soccer, car races...the list goes on), hobbies (music, reading, crafts, gardening...just a tiny taste, for hobby subjects could fill a library). And pets...I think there may be a bumper sticker for every breed of dog known! Then there are the lovers of cats, and all the other types of pets that people adore. The list of all the things we love could go on for a Millennium! We can say we "love" things, but is that what we really mean? Consider the difference: "I love pizza," versus "I love my family." It's a matter of semantics--the meaning behind the words we use. (Hopefully we love our family more than pizza!) However, if there is too much focus on the "things" in this bumper-sticker world of ours, we can get ourselves into trouble. Biblical Scripture from Matthew 6:21 says, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." So, whatever it is that we treasure will become our focus. John 4:19 offers a simple description of love: "We love because He first loved us." God created love. And He wants to share it with us. Now back to bumper stickers. Maybe our personal message doesn't need to say anything more than, "I Love." Everything else is secondary. At least that's the way I think God would see it. May you simply....Love!
